Biography

Lionel Ziblat is an Argentine-born, Amsterdam-based composer working across concert music, opera and music composed to picture. His catalogue includes orchestral and chamber works, music for solo voice and choir, and works for the stage.

A strong dramatic instinct runs through his music, while his concert works possess a distinct, uncompromising character and are conceived to stand fully on their own. Writing for voice - both solo and choral - is one of his particular strengths, in dramatic contexts as well as in autonomous concert music.

In 2024, four of his orchestral works were performed by Argentina’s National Symphony Orchestra at the Ballena Azul in Buenos Aires. His concert music has been commissioned by the Leo Smit Foundation, Stichting YO! for a Buffo Opera Makers production, Duo Lind’n Kelder and the Utrecht Flute Quartet. His long-standing relationship with the Ricciotti Ensemble has encompassed both commissioned works and extensive arranging. He has also written original concert music for pianist Daria van den Bercken, harpist Lavinia Meijer and the KWIVR Brass Quintet.

His music and arrangements have been performed at major venues including Het Concertgebouw, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, Paradiso and La Ballena Azul in Buenos Aires, as well as at theatres, festivals and cultural venues in the Netherlands and abroad. His concert music and arrangements have also been featured on television and radio by NPO, NOS, BNNVARA, KRO-NCRV, NPO Radio 4, Argentina’s Radio Nacional Clásica and Latvia’s SEMS television, through concert broadcasts, performances, interviews and programmes featuring his original compositions and arrangements.

As an arranger and orchestrator, Ziblat has written for the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Dutch Ballet Orchestra and chamber ensembles presented through the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s official chamber music programme. His projects have included collaborations with soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek and tango singer Omar Mollo. He was also commissioned by the Dutch Flute Orchestra to create arrangements for Lerner & Moguilevsky and the ensemble.

For film and documentary, Ziblat has composed original scores and contributed orchestrations to feature-film soundtracks. His orchestration credits include Footnote, nominated for the 2012 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
